Vapor’s Fatigue or Vapor’s Tongue – What Is It And How To Get Rid Of It

Simply put, vapor’s fatigue is when a person is no longer able to taste the full flavor of an E-liquid as they vape. That is not a chronic problem for the vast majority of people. However, some folks will experience olfactory fatigue.

Vapor’s fatigue, or olfactory fatigue is not unique to those that use e-cigarettes. It’s a well-established fact that cigarette smoking dulls the sense of smell as well as the sense of taste. Even some foods can numb our senses to the flavor if we eat them too often.

Certain dental and medical procedures, as well as medication and drugs, can dull our senses too. The good news is that vapors tongue can be easily mitigated or remedied whereas certain dental or medical procedures will sometimes leave permanent damage to the olfactory nerves.

vapor's fatigueMost people know that the tongue has an extraordinary ability to sense five distinct flavors. Those are sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and savory. Now, some people may describe these five flavors differently, but according to various journals, these are the top five flavors that we humans recognize.

For instance, most people can recognize fruit as being sweet. They can recognize green apples as sour while most people will recognize bacon as salty. The point is that most people recognize flavors when they taste them.

It is the olfactory sensors within our nasal passage that allow us to recognize different flavors. However, when vapor’s fatigue develops, it sometimes dulls the olfactory sensors causing the flavor of the E-juice to diminish. That is undesirable since many folks use flavored E-liquid because they enjoy the taste.

On the bright side, many ex-smokers say that their sense of taste improves when they make the switch from cigarettes to E-liquid. They also claim their sense of smell is improved and as we all know there are many health benefits to quitting tobacco smoking. With that said how can we overcome vapors fatigue?

The answer to vapor’s fatigue is simple. Drink more water.

The nasal passage is a mucous membrane. The majority of mucus is made up of water. When we are dehydrated our nasal passages become dry, and the mucus becomes thick. That contributes to olfactory fatigue. Therefore, be sure to drink at least eight glasses of clean, healthy water every day. It will go a long way toward relieving olfactory adaptation.

Another way to relieve vapor tongue is to use a room humidifier That is what Ray Marsili recommends in the book titled: Techniques for Analyzing FOOD AROMA (Dean Foods Company, Rockford, Illinois).

Dehydration can also cause a whole host of other problems too. Energy loss, constipation, digestive disorders, urinary tract infection and a whole host of other issues can stem from dehydration. Consequently, it only makes sense to stay hydrated.

Olfactory Fatigue Experiment

At the CMS science fair Julia Sorensen showed how long it takes for olfactory fatigue to set in when she exposed test subjects to various spices. Almond extract, vanilla extract, and cinnamon were just a few of the items she used. She also used a stopwatch and had her test subjects drink water.

Almond extract took the longest to weaken people’s sense of smell. At the other end of her test, in just 13.1seconds the test subjects had diminished smell of cinnamon. It was not conclusive if olfactory fatigue affects males or females more.

If you can no longer taste your favorite E-liquid as strongly as you once did, then simply switch to another flavor for a while. Using this technique is not unlike anything else we humans do. If we eat the same thing often enough, we get tired of it. Mc Donald’s doesn’t taste as good if we eat it every day for a month. But if we don’t eat Mc Donald’s for a month or two it will taste good to us again. So, switching E-Liquid flavors for a while may help you to enjoy your favorite E-liquid again.

In most cases, vapor’s fatigue or vapors tongue is a temporary issue that clears up on its own or one that can be easily remedied using the suggestions above. Drink lots of water, use a room humidifier, or switch flavors for a while. These will often fix the problem.

The vapor’s fatigue methods above are not intended to be medical advice. If your vapor’s fatigue lasts longer than a week, it is best to seek professional medical attention. The problem may go beyond simple olfactory fatigue or vapor’s fatigue.
